6 Supplements for Men’s Health

Men’s Health is often overlooked, or fails to be brought up at annual checkups. At Makers, we hear a lot from the spouses of men who are feeling less than 100%. From falling asleep right after dinner in the recliner to feeling aches and pains after a weekend full of projects around the house–men deserve to feel their best!

Some of the most common complaints we hear are

  • Chronic Pain
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Weight Gain
  • Sexual Dysfunction/Low Libido
  • Pain from an old injury
  • Loss of Muscle Mass

Preventative care & taking care of the small issues now can prevent more severe health concerns in the future! Here are a few supplements recommended by owner/pharmacist Michelle Moser, RPh, FACA, FACVP.

1. Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium Glycinate is a natural muscle relaxer. With less GI side effects than other forms of Magnesium, it can be helpful with getting restful sleep when taken at bedtime.

Magnesium is required for over 300 processes happening in your body, and many are deficient in this essential nutrient! Magnesium Glycinate can also be helpful with heart health, aches and pains, and blood sugar levels.

2. Omega Fatty Acids

You likely have heard a lot about Omegas 3 & 6. While these are important, we recommend focusing your supplementation on Omegas 3 & 9.

The source of your omega supplement is incredibly important. You want a source that is testing for heavy metals so you aren’t introducing any toxins into your body!

3. Vitamin D

Even though the human body can manufacture vitamin D, there is evidence that much of the American population suffers from a deficiency of this nutrient. Supplementation with vitamin D is critical to helping maintain healthy bone remodeling.

Studies show that vitamin D interacts directly with cells responsible for fighting infection. Therefore, researchers have come to the conclusion that a deficiency in vitamin D could increase your risk of getting infected by any virus. Several studies have also shown that vitamin D supplements may lower your risk of respiratory tract infection.

4. Multi-Vitamin

A high quality multivitamin is a key supplement that men need. There are many out there, and some have recommended serving sizes of up to 6 capsules a day! With a serving size of only 1-2 capsules a day, our active life multi is easier to fit into your routine. In men’s health, a multi-vitamin is often the best option for fitting supplementation into their routine.

Quick Tip: If your multivitamin is sitting hard on your stomach, causing side effects like gurgling, burping, or a lasting “full” feeling, you may want to add digestive enzymes to help lighten the load!

5. Red Yeast Rice Extract

Cholesterol is a hot topic whenever we are discussing men’s health! Many individuals with elevated cholesterol have been able to improve their cardiovascular health with the aid of nutritional supplements. One of the nutraceuticals that has been shown in research studies to support normal LDL and total cholesterol levels is red yeast rice.

Red yeast rice is the product of yeast (Monascus purpureus) grown on rice and contains several compounds that are collectively known as monacolins which support the mechanisms that can lead to improved cardiovascular health.

Each capsule contains 600 mg of organic red yeast rice grown in the U.S. and manufactured to avoid the presence of citrinin; a toxin that can be produced during the fermentation process.

6. Prostate Health Support

Urinary urgency or inability to void urine completely are some common complaints as men age. Prostate enlargement can be behind these symptoms, and it’s important to address these concerns early.

Prostate Health Support contains ingredients such as saw palmetto, nettle root, and pumpkin seed extract to provide combined benefits for prostate and urinary health in men.

Saw palmetto has been used safely for decades to support proper prostate and urinary function. Its primary mode of action involves maintaining healthy testosterone metabolism.

Nettle root has indicated the ability to support healthy enzyme activity and maintain healthy hormone metabolism in prostate cells.

Zinc, Pygeum africanum, and Pumpkin Seed Oil are nutrients that have demonstrated an important role in the healthy function of the prostate gland and urinary tract.
