Natural Easter Egg Dyes You Already Have

Using natural ingredients you may already have in your kitchen, you can dye Easter eggs without worrying!
Artificial food coloring is one of the most common allergens found in most processed foods. Using food coloring or dye tablets bought from most grocery stores in your Easter weekend festivities can be harmful!

 

Why you should be using natural food dyes instead of artificial food coloring:

  • Colors often will soak through the shell and stain the egg
  • Artificial dyes have been linked to behavioral and attention problems in children (read more on the science)
  • Food coloring may have negative effects on long term health, contributing to terminal conditions such as cancer (read more on the science)

 

Keep reading to discover common, natural household ingredients you can use to replace artificial food coloring or coloring tablets, without compromising your Easter weekend plans!

Choose your color!

Red/Orange

  • Chili Powder
  • Yellow Onion Skins
  • Paprika
  • Dill Seed (left to soak for a long time)

Yellow

  • Chopped Carrot Tops
  • Orange Peels
  • Cumin
  • Yellow Apple Skins + Chopped Fennel Tops
  • Turmeric
  • Dill Seed (less soaking time)
  • Chamomile Tea (strongly brewed)
  • Green Tea (strongly brewed)

green

  • Purple Cabbage used to dye brown eggs
  • Spinach
  • Red Onion Skins
  • Hibiscus Tea (strongly brewed)

Blue

  • Red Cabbage
  • Purple Cabbage
  • Blueberry Juice (gives a steel blue color)

Lavender

  • Grape Juice (no boiling, just mix with 1-2 tbsp vinegar per cup and get coloring!)

pink

  • Amaranth Flowers
  • Avocado Skins
  • Beets

brown

  • Strong brewed coffee (no boiling, just mix with 1-2 tbsp vinegar per cup and get coloring!)

 

 

Directions

  1. Bring natural dye agent (such as beet chunks) to boil in just enough water to cover the ingredients
  2. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until you see your desired color
  3. Remove from heat, let dye cool to room temperature (this is a good time to hard boil some eggs!)
  4. Strain the dye so there are no remaining chunks, just the liquid (WARNING: do not store dyes in plastic containers, the containers may be stained. Using glass jars is recommended)
  5. Add 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar per cup of dye
  6. Carefully place eggs in the dye
  7. Store in fridge for a couple hours, or overnight (the longer they sit, the more vibrant the colors are!)

Some tips:

  • All natural or organic produce should be washed before use
  • Hard boiled eggs should be wiped off with a washcloth or paper towel to remove any oils that would prevent the dye from sticking
  • Mix some colors and have fun with your combinations!
    • Red + Blue = Purple
    • Blue + Green = Teal
